Cynthia Ogunsemilore, the gold medalist at the African Games, stands out as the sole Nigerian female boxer who has secured qualification for the Paris Olympics. In an interview with PETER AKINBO, she shares insights into her boxing journey, aspirations for the Olympics, and more.
How did you initially become involved in boxing?
My introduction to boxing occurred in 2013 through my coach. At the age of 10, during a visit to the gym, my coach invited me to give it a try alongside the other boxers. It was an exhilarating experience, and ever since that day, I’ve had a deep passion for the sport.
Did your parents consistently support your decision to pursue boxing?
Indeed, my parents have consistently backed my choice. Right from the beginning, they provided encouragement and made efforts to accommodate my training schedule because they had faith in my boxing skills.
Was boxing initially challenging or did you find it relatively easy to adapt to?
My initiation into boxing occurred under challenging circumstances, as I hail from a financially disadvantaged family with little support available. I encountered numerous obstacles along the journey, which fueled my determination to train rigorously and overcome any adversaries I faced.
You began boxing while still in school. How did you manage the dual responsibilities?
Yes, I commenced my boxing journey during my school years. Balancing both pursuits was challenging since neither schooling nor boxing alone is easy. After completing my classes, I would immediately head to training before returning home for some rest, but I persisted because I was driven by my aspirations.
Have you ever contemplated giving up on boxing?
Certainly, there were occasions when I contemplated quitting boxing, particularly when I lacked support for essentials like equipment. However, I maintained the belief that one day I would achieve my goals and bring joy to my family, which motivated me to persevere. I’m pleased to see some rewards beginning to materialize now.
What has been the most joyous moment in your boxing career thus far?
The most joyous moment in my career thus far is undoubtedly qualifying for the Olympic Games in Paris, as it has been a longstanding dream of mine. When I secured my spot during the qualifiers in Senegal, I was overwhelmed with joy. Qualifying alongside two other male boxers and representing female athletes brought me immense happiness.
What would you consider the most challenging moment of your career?
The most heartbreaking moment of my career occurred during the 2022 Commonwealth Games in the United Kingdom when I was defeated in the semi-final stage. I had entered the competition with strong hopes of securing the gold medal, but ultimately had to settle for bronze. While winning a medal brought some joy, I couldn’t shake off the disappointment of falling short of my expectations. However, I am determined to use this setback as motivation to excel in future competitions.
How did it feel to win the gold medal in Accra at the African Games?
Securing the gold medal in Accra at the African Games was incredibly thrilling for me because I had dedicated immense effort to achieve it. It was a significant milestone in my journey toward redemption after the disappointment of my Commonwealth bronze. Now, my focus is on the Olympic Games, where I aim to bring home another major gold medal for Nigeria.
How excited are you about representing Nigeria at the Games, and what are your preparations like?
I am thrilled to have qualified for the Olympics in Paris as it has been a lifelong dream of mine. I am eagerly anticipating the opportunity to represent Nigeria at the Games and strive to secure a gold medal. I have been diligently preparing for this momentous occasion, recognizing it as the pinnacle of my career. Currently, I am taking some time to recuperate from an injury sustained during the African Games in Ghana. However, once I am fully recovered, I will resume training with renewed vigor and dedication to ensure I am well-prepared for the Games.
What significance does participating in the Games hold for you?
Competing at the Games is an immense honor and opportunity for me, and I am fully committed to securing the gold medal. I am determined to overcome any obstacles and give my all on the grand stage of the Olympics.
