The President of the Nigeria Football Federation, Ibrahim Musa Gusau, has disclosed the specifics of the contract awarded to the new Super Eagles head coach, Finidi George.
The former Super Eagles winger, Finidi George, was appointed as the head coach of the senior national men’s team and was introduced by the board at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium on Monday.
While some media reports speculated that his contract was for only one year, the President of the Nigeria Football Federation, Ibrahim Musa Gusau, clarified on Soccer Africa, a popular TV show in South Africa, that this information was incorrect. Gusau stated, “I don’t know where the one-year contract information came from. As far as our contract with Finidi is concerned, he will be in charge of the team until the end of 2026.”
“So, it’s clear that a contract extending to 2026 is not just for one year.
“The crucial aspect of any contract is setting specific benchmarks and targets to ensure optimal performance.
“The initial target is to qualify the team for next year’s Nations Cup and reach at least the semi-finals. Additionally, we aim to qualify for the World Cup and achieve a quarter-final appearance.”
“These are the primary objectives outlined in his contract, and we’re diligently striving to achieve them by the grace of God,” he further remarked.
Gusau also clarified that the federation didn’t impose George’s choice of assistants.
Daniel Amokachi, Benjamin James, Olatunji Baruwa, Chima Onyeike, and Mehmet Ozturk will serve as assistants to the former Enyimba FC manager.
“I was delighted when we introduced Finidi to Nigeria. The NFF Technical Director compiled the list of names, and they selected the ones they believed would be most effective. All the individuals you see named as Finidi’s assistants were chosen by him,” Gusau explained.
The Super Eagles are set to host South Africa in their upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying match at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo on Friday, June 7th.
Following that, the three-time African champions will journey to Abidjan to play against Benin at the Felix Houphouet Boigny Stadium three days later.
