Leicester City secured promotion to the Premier League on Friday following a surprising 4-0 defeat for rivals Leeds United against Queens Park Rangers.
This outcome places Leicester at the top of the Championship with 94 points and two games remaining, while Leeds remains in second place with 90 points and only one game left to play.
However, third-place Ipswich Town, with 89 points and three matches remaining, still has a chance to surpass Leeds for the second automatic promotion spot.
“It’s no longer within our control for automatic promotion,” Leeds manager Daniel Farke commented to the BBC.
“The competition isn’t finished yet. If Ipswich wins the next two games, then I’ll extend my congratulations. However, if they don’t, we still have plenty to fight for, especially in our final match against Southampton.
As long as there’s a possibility, I’m not ready to give up,” stated Daniel Farke, Leeds’ manager.
Enzo Maresca’s Leicester City achieved promotion in their first attempt after being relegated from the Premier League last season.
Back in February, the Foxes were on course for promotion, leading by 12 points at the top and enjoying a comfortable 14-point gap over the third-placed team.
On Tuesday, they confronted Southampton, another team aiming for promotion, despite having lost six of their previous 11 matches. However, they delivered an emphatic 5-0 win over the Saints, courtesy of a hat-trick from Issahaky Fatawu and goals from Wilfred Ndidi and the ever-reliable Jamie Vardy. This commanding victory brought them to the brink of a return to the Premier League.
The jubilation of promotion may be dampened somewhat by the fact that they were charged by the Premier League in March for alleged breaches of profit and sustainability rules (PSR) over the past three years in the top flight. If found guilty, Leicester could face a points deduction as they prepare to re-enter the top flight.
Meanwhile, QPR secured a crucial victory over Leeds with goals from Ilias Chair, Lucas Andersen, Lyndon Dykes, and Sam Field. This win ensured their survival in the Championship, a remarkable achievement considering they were second from bottom when Marti Cifuentes took charge from Gareth Ainsworth in October.
