Ajax maintains their fifth position in the Eredivisie and remains in contention for a Europa League spot next season after securing a crucial 2-2 draw against Excelsior on Wednesday evening.
Initially facing the prospect of defeat, Ajax managed to salvage a point thanks to Chuba Akpom’s equalizer in the 88th minute.
However, despite his pivotal role in Ajax’s campaign, reports suggest that Akpom is eager to return to England. The 28-year-old forward joined the four-time UEFA Champions League winners last summer in a transfer deal potentially worth €14.3 million. Although his contract with De Joden runs until the summer of 2028, Akpom is already considering exploring opportunities elsewhere after just eight months with the club.
Ajax has underperformed in the Dutch Eredivisie this season, currently sitting in fifth place in the league standings. Their position does not reflect their disappointing performance, as they trail league leaders PSV Eindhoven by 32 points.
Despite starting the season with optimism, Chuba Akpom, the former Brighton player, has seen limited playing time, accumulating just 789 minutes on the field, mostly as a substitute.
According to Sportswitness UK, Akpom, a graduate of the Hale End Academy, is considering a departure from Ajax in the summer, with a preference for returning to England. Both Marco Silva’s Fulham and Nuno Espirito Santo’s Nottingham Forest are reportedly interested in acquiring the striker’s services.
Even though he has only started a handful of matches, the former Hull City player has contributed to 11 goals for the Eredivisie record holders, netting 10 goals himself and providing one assist.
