The Electoral Commission has issued a one-week ultimatum to the 18 political parties in Ondo State, instructing them to submit their candidates and running mates. Additionally, the Commission has announced the resumption of Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) in both Ondo and Edo States, allowing eligible citizens who are not yet registered voters to do so, as well as facilitating registration transfers for those in need.Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, the Chairman of INEC, along with Commission Members, held a consultative meeting with political party leaders in preparation for the 2024 Edo and Ondo States Governorship Elections. During the meeting, they provided new updates and guidelines for the upcoming elections in Ondo and Edo.
According to the report obtained by SWIFTNEWSREPORTERS via the X Social platform from the Commission’s verified handle, the following information was relayed:
“Today’s meeting aims to update party leaders on the preparations for the Edo and Ondo State Governorship elections.
“As you are aware, the Edo State Governorship election is scheduled to take place in the next four months on Saturday, September 21st, 2024, while the Ondo Governorship election is set for the next six months on Saturday, November 16th, 2024.
“The Commission has already released the final list of candidates for the Edo State Governorship election, following the completion of party primaries and the conclusion of the period for withdrawal and substitution of candidates as outlined in the Timetable and Schedule of Activities for the election.
“Campaigning in public by political parties commenced on Wednesday, April 24th, 2024, and is scheduled to conclude at midnight on Thursday, September 19th, 2024, which is 24 hours prior to the election date as stipulated by law. I would like to take this opportunity to once again emphasize to party leaders the importance of maintaining law and order throughout the electoral process and beyond.
“As we approach Election Day in Edo State, it is crucial to remind political parties to strictly adhere to the timeline for submitting the list of polling and collation agents to the designated portal. This will facilitate the timely production and distribution of identity cards for the expected 76,823 Polling Unit agents and 3,587 Ward, Local Government, and State collation agents representing the 17 political parties participating in the election.”
