The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) Anambra State Command apprehended eight individuals for unlawfully operating as private guards and recovered four pump action guns with 16 live cartridges from them.
Olatunde Maku, the Commandant of NSCDC in Anambra State, disclosed that the suspects were apprehended during a recent crackdown on unlicensed private security guards in Awka.
Maku, while presenting the suspects at the agency’s headquarters in Awka on Friday, emphasized that the NSCDC, as the regulatory body of private security guards, is dedicated to monitoring the activities of unapproved private security guards, particularly in light of current security challenges.
He stated, “We are continuing to fulfill the mandate of the NSCDC without any negligence. The directive given to me by the Commandant General of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Dr Ahmed Abubakar Audi, is to ensure the enforcement of the core responsibilities of the corps in Anambra State.”
“The apprehension of these suspects occurred subsequent to a raid conducted on Thursday, April 25, 2024, by NSCDC operatives in Awka, Anambra state. The initial three suspects, employees of RSS, were detained at Kwata Junction in Awka.”
“In addition, four pump-action guns with 16 live cartridges were also seized from the suspects.”
Maku elaborated that initial investigations indicated that some of the apprehended individuals were posing as members of the Anambra Vigilance Group, while others had been recruited by hotels to offer security services, despite being aware that these establishments were unlicensed and unregistered.
Furthermore, the suspects were found in possession of four pump-action guns along with 16 live cartridges.
Maku further detailed that preliminary inquiries suggested that certain arrested individuals were masquerading as members of the Anambra Vigilance Group, while others had been enlisted by hotels to provide security services, despite their awareness of the establishments being unlicensed and unregistered.
