The Nasarawa State Police Command has apprehended three suspected members of a criminal syndicate who impersonated EFCC operatives and allegedly robbed students of the Federal Polytechnic, Nasarawa, as well as abducted an ND II student named Adudu Kingsley.
DSP Ramhan Nansel, the spokesperson of the command, revealed this in a statement on Wednesday, May 1, 2024. He stated that one member of the alleged four-man robbery and kidnapping syndicate was caught and subjected to severe beatings by an angry mob before the arrival of the police.
Despite efforts to rescue the suspect from the mob and provide medical treatment at Primary Health Care, Laminga, he succumbed to his injuries.
The remaining three suspects—Hyelda Aliyu Ibrahim, Henry Patrick Okwu, and Shuaibu Abubakar, all residents of Customs Quarters and Up Market area of Masaka, Karu LGA of Nasarawa State—were later arrested.
According to the statement, the incident occurred on April 17, 2024, when four individuals posing as EFCC personnel, driving a green Toyota Corolla with registration number Abuja YAB 509 TT, robbed students at Samakwe Lodge behind Government College, Nasarawa LGA, and abducted Adudu Kingsley.
The police pursued the suspects, but they evaded capture by hitting a barrier and fleeing the scene. Subsequently, one suspect was apprehended by an angry mob and later died from injuries sustained during the assault.
Further investigation led to the recovery of two identification cards linking the fleeing suspects to the syndicate.
Additionally, the search of the recovered vehicle yielded an iPhone 12 Pro Max, Huawei, and Tecno Spark 5 smartphones, along with fake EFCC ID cards.
The suspects confessed to being responsible for robbing and terrorizing student areas in Keffi and Nasarawa LGA. Efforts are ongoing to apprehend one identified suspect who remains at large.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Shehu Umar Nadada, has instructed the transfer of the case to the State Criminal Investigation Department, Lafia, for further investigations. Once the investigation is concluded, the suspects will be charged to court for prosecution.
