In an interview on Channels TV’s Politics Today, veteran journalist Dele Momodu offered insights into the ongoing feud between Governor Sim Fubara of Rivers State and the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.
Momodu suggested that their political rivalry stems from a struggle for control over the treasury of Rivers State.
Since Governor Fubara assumed office on May 29, 2023, he and Wike have been engaged in a fierce rivalry.
This conflict has affected various levels of governance in Rivers State, including the state House of Assembly, local government chairmen, and certain state commissioners loyal to both factions.
President Bola Tinubu intervened in the dispute and persuaded both sides to sign a peace agreement. However, despite this peace accord, tensions persist between the two parties and their supporters.
Regarding the ongoing conflict, Momodu remarked, “The feud in Rivers is purely political. It revolves around power and financial interests in the state.
Tinubu has a stake in Rivers through Wike.
They seek control over the state not only to secure votes but also to access its treasury directly. Rivers State plays a significant role in Nigeria’s elections.”
