Amid the ongoing scarcity of Petroleum Motor Spirit (petrol), resulting in overcrowded fuel stations across cities in Nigeria, the Ogun State Police Command has announced its collaboration with fuel stations across the state to mitigate the risk of violence.
Omolola Odutola, the Command’s Public Relations Officer, shared in a WhatsApp conversation on Thursday that this partnership aims to prevent potential outbreaks of violence stemming from overcrowding at fuel stations.
Earlier, an incident where Toheeb Eniasa was allegedly shot at a petrol station owned by the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited in the Ikoyi area of Lagos State. This occurrence, our correspondent learned, took place late Wednesday and has instilled fear among residents of the area.
Our correspondent, present at the scene of the incident, learned from local residents that Eniasa was waiting in line to purchase petrol when the event occurred.
While waiting in the queue, two individuals, suspected to be military officers, tried to enter the station to buy petrol, disregarding the queue protocol. This action faced opposition from other customers.
The resulting conflict reportedly escalated into a confrontation between the military personnel and Eniasa, culminating in one of the military personnel firing a shot at him, ultimately resulting in his demise.
Odutola emphasized that the meeting, which included representatives from major fuel stations across the state, took place on Monday.
She elaborated, “Representatives from various stations, including Mobil Filling Station, M. Olaoluwa Filling Station, Gateway Filling Station, MRS. Filling Station, A.A. Rano Filling Station, Teejay Filling Station, and Optima Energy Filling Station, among others, attended the meeting.”
“The gathering was convened in compliance with the directives of the Commissioner of Police, CP Abiodun Alamutu, Ogun State Command, in response to the ongoing fuel crisis,” she continued.
“Participants were advised to ensure orderliness at their respective stations, prevent traffic congestion, discourage indiscriminate parking of vehicles, mitigate any instances of unruliness, and avoid actions that could potentially lead to disorder. These measures were aimed at maintaining security and orderly conduct during the fuel sales process,” she added.
Odutola concluded by stating that the participants were provided with the contact details of Divisional Police Officers to facilitate swift intervention when necessary.
