An unidentified pregnant woman and eight other individuals suffered injuries of varying degrees following a gas explosion in Alaba Lane, Alayabiagba Community, located in the Ajegunle-Apapa area of Lagos State.
According to reports from Lagosstate.com, the incident occurred on Tuesday around 12:39 p.m.
Confirming the occurrence to our correspondent, Amodu Shakiru, the Head of Public Education at the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, stated that initial investigations revealed that several gas cylinders being traded in the area included one that was ignited by a possible leak. This ignition caused a rupture in a high-tension cable, resulting in a fire outbreak.
Shakiru further explained that the fire caused damage to four commercial tricycles, six lock-up stores, and a section of a bungalow building.
“Initial inquiries indicate that multiple gas cylinders being exchanged within the vicinity had one that was ignited due to a suspected leak, causing a high-tension cable to snap and resulting in a fire outbreak.
“Four commercial tricycles, six lock-up shops, and a section of a bungalow were engulfed by the fire, while efforts were made to protect adjacent structures, including a significant fuel service station,” Shakiru explained.
He emphasized that the prompt containment of the incident was achieved through the collaborative efforts of the Federal Fire Service, the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, as well as the fire stations in Ajegunle and Sari-Iganmu.
Shakiru highlighted that the pregnant woman and other victims are currently undergoing treatment at the Gbagada Burn & Trauma Centre and Ajeromi General Hospital, following initial medical attention provided by the Lagos State Ambulance Service.
“However, nine individuals, including a pregnant woman, children, and adults of both genders, sustained varying degrees of burn injuries. They are now recuperating at the Ajeromi General Hospital and Gbagada Burnt & Trauma Centre after receiving preliminary aid from the Lagos State Ambulance Service.
“The swift containment of the incident was achieved through the combined efforts of the Ajegunle and Sari-Iganmu Fire Stations of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, with support from the Federal Fire Service.”
