A residential building in Ilorin, the capital of Kwara State, was engulfed in flames on Saturday morning, resulting in injuries to an 86-year-old man.
This information was conveyed by Hassan Adekunle, the spokesperson for the Kwara State Fire Service, in a statement issued on the same day.
According to Adekunle, the fire began around noon while the elderly man, who was said to be cooking, briefly stepped out to attend to someone before returning to find the building ablaze.
According to Adekunle, the fire incident occurred at a 12-room building situated on Afolayan Street in the state capital. Reports indicate that one room within the building was ravaged by the fire, resulting in the destruction of some belongings and personal items.
Adekunle stated, “Upon arrival at the scene, firefighters observed that only one room had been affected, with the fire causing damage to belongings and personal items. Our firefighters promptly intervened, effectively containing the fire and preventing its spread to adjacent buildings.”
Investigations into the incident revealed that an 86-year-old resident, who had been cooking, briefly left the room to attend to someone. Upon returning, he discovered the fire in his apartment.
“The spokesperson, however, urged residents of the state to prioritize fire safety while expressing sympathy for the victim.
“In a statement, Adekunle mentioned, ‘The Director of the Kwara State Fire Service, Prince Falade John, expressed sympathy for the octogenarian’s injuries and stressed the importance of fire safety awareness, urging the public to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions to prevent such incidents.’
“Lagosstate.com reported on Friday that a failure to properly extinguish a charcoal fire used for cooking on Thursday night led to a fire that engulfed a 40-room flat at the Ile Muse compound, off Emir’s Road in Ilorin, Kwara State.
“It was reported that 9 out of the 40 rooms at No. E143, Ile Muse, off Emir’s road, Ilorin in Ilorin West Local Government Area of Kwara were destroyed by the inferno that engulfed the building early on Friday.
“An eyewitness account supported by the state fire service’s report indicated that the fire incident started in the early hours of Friday and was caused by an unextinguished charcoal fire left overnight by one of the residents after cooking their meals.”
