Famous street musician, Habeeb Okikiola, popularly called Portable, has remained in police custody for failing to meet the bail conditions for his release.
DAILY POST had reported that he was arrested for allegedly refusing to pay the N14 million debt he incurred when he bought a G-Wagon from a car dealer in Lagos State.
According to the Lagos State Police Command’s spokesman, Benjamin Hudenyin, the singer will remain in detention pending when he’s able to produce a reliable surety before he can be granted bail.“He has presented no reliable surety yet so he (Portable) is still with us,” Hundeyin said.
Confirming that Portable spent the night in a police cell following his arrest, the state Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, stated on Wednesday that the musician remained in police custody.
Hundeyin explained, “He has not provided a dependable surety yet, so he (Portable) is still in our custody.”
Meanwhile, in two viral videos capturing the moments police attempted to arrest Portable, it was observed in one of the videos that Portable tried to evade arrest by fleeing the scene.
The pursuing policemen eventually caught up with Portable and subdued him.
Despite being restrained, our correspondent observed in the second video that Portable resisted arrest as four policemen carried and placed him into a vehicle.
These video clips have sparked various reactions.
While some individuals criticized Portable for resisting arrest, others blamed him for tarnishing his reputation by failing to settle the N14 million debt incurred during the vehicle purchase.
PUNCH Online previously reported that during the purchase of the N27 million vehicle, Portable only paid N13 million and refused to settle the N14 million balance.
Despite numerous unsuccessful attempts to collect the outstanding balance, the car dealer reported Portable to the police, claiming that Portable’s excuse for non-payment was that the vehicle was faulty.
