Olatosho Oshoffa, the son of Bilewu Oshoffa, the founder of the Celestial Church of Christ, Worldwide, has offered a defense for his father’s extensive family and the tradition of polygamy within the church.
The leader of the Celestial Church of Christ International Headquarters in Ketu, Lagos, emphasized that the church does not prohibit polygamy, citing the fact that no prophets in the Bible were monogamous.
He remarked, “Let me share something with you… In that scripture, Paul was merely offering advice. Show me in the Bible, which prophet of God had only one wife? Look it up and let me know.”
The late Oshoffa left behind 13 wives and 53 children.
Olatosho emphasized that despite his late father already having three wives, God still granted him the vision to establish his ministry 76 years ago.
He remarked, “I am certain that in 1947, if there had been a better candidate to establish CCC, Oshoffa wouldn’t have been chosen.
“However, since there was no better candidate, he was the one whom God deemed worthy to establish CCC, despite being married to three wives. So those who criticize my father should understand that he never had any concubine.
“He wedded them, and they all lived under his roof. Yet today, certain self-proclaimed men of God with only one wife have extramarital affairs.
“Which scenario is preferable? Therefore, I would assert that if God were to assess based on the number of wives before sending a bishop or pastor on a mission, my father would have been disqualified because he had three wives before God called him,” he affirmed.
When queried about how his father managed to maintain close bonds within his extensive family, he mentioned that his father never treated the children differently based on their mothers.
Allow me to share something with you, my dear friend. Our father, during his time on earth, would gather us together and instruct us, “Never identify yourself as the child of any particular wife of mine. Instead, recognize yourself as a child of Oshoffa.”
“This demonstrates how he used the bond of love to unite us. So, we don’t view ourselves as children of individual mothers but as children of Oshoffa. That’s how we interacted when he was alive and continue to do so after his passing.
“Even today, I still regard the remaining wives of Oshoffa, who were younger than my mother, as my mothers because of the love our father used to unite us. Thus, we all remain unified as children of SBJ Oshoffa,” he elaborated.
Regarding the leadership turmoil within the Celestial Church, the clergyman remarked that such upheaval was expected following the founder’s demise.
However, Olatosho expressed optimism that the issues would be resolved in due course.
He mentioned that his eldest brother, Rev. Emmanuel Oshoffa, serves as the church’s leader.
“When the founder of our church departed, similar to the departure of Jesus Christ, there were conflicts among the apostles regarding leadership succession. Similarly, as history records, the Catholic Church once faced a period with multiple Popes. However, over time, they unified under a single Pope.
“We encounter a comparable scenario within the CCC. Following the passing of our founder, there were significant challenges and disputes regarding succession, akin to those experienced by the Catholic Church,” he explained.
