Renowned fashion designer Veekee James has shared valuable insights for aspiring and emerging fashion designers on managing their brands. In a post uploaded to Instagram on May 14, 2024, she detailed the measures aspiring designers can take to protect their brand. She stated, “I’m not familiar with the current social media buzz, so I can’t comment on it! Here’s my advice based on my own experiences.”James cautioned emerging designers against situations where clients force them to choose between payment for their work or social media recognition. “If anyone presents you with the ‘Money or tag’ ultimatum, run! Many well-known individuals, both domestically and internationally, have used this tactic with me, and that was the end of our collaboration. Today, some of them are eager to be associated with my brand. It underscores a lack of respect or regard for your brand. Allowing this undermines the value of your brand entirely!” she emphasized. The designer urged fellow designers to prioritize the core values of their brands when working with celebrities. “Be discerning! Don’t prioritize money over integrity! Sacrifices in business are inevitable. Once you’ve established the principles of your brand, be selective in collaborations, focusing on celebrities who also respect your vision. Remember, collaboration should benefit both parties equally. It’s not about one party doing the other a favor!”
She stressed the importance of maintaining faith and cautioned against relying solely on celebrity clients for publicity. “Don’t seek validation solely through individuals. Understand that only God elevates people, using those He chooses. Don’t attempt to achieve what only God can do for your brand. Avoid expecting publicity from every celebrity and making hasty decisions out of desperation,” she advised. The celebrity designer further remarked, “If you aspire to be a fashion designer, delve into the true essence of the profession to avoid mistakenly presenting yourself as a designer when you’re actually a tailor. Stay true to your craft!”
