In a remarkable transformation, the utilitarian concrete basement of London’s Tate Modern museum turned into a vibrant green jungle for a single night. This unexpected metamorphosis marked the hottest fashion event in the city.
Gucci, the renowned Italian luxury fashion brand, chose the modern art museum by the Thames as the venue for its star-studded cruise collection runway show. The event showcased a range of delicate sheer garments, casual denim attire, and daytime wear, all accentuated with the brand’s iconic leather bags and accessories featuring the double-G logo.
Celebrities like actors Paul Mescal and Andrew Scott, along with singers Dua Lipa and Solange Knowles, graced the front row. Among the notable attendees were Salma Hayek and her husband, Francois-Henri Pinault, who serves as the chair and CEO of Kering, Gucci’s parent company.
This grand-scale affair unveiled the inaugural cruise collection by Sabato De Sarno, who assumed the role of Gucci’s creative director last year. De Sarno had previously debuted his womenswear designs in September, marking a significant moment for the fashion house.
Gucci typically hosts its fashion shows in Milan, but like many other leading fashion brands, it selects venues worldwide to showcase its cruise collections. These presentations occur between the main spring and autumn displays.
On Monday, models elegantly walked down a runway that snaked through a lush landscape of hundreds of ferns, hanging plants, and moss-covered paths, creating a striking contrast against the industrial, grey show space. De Sarno emphasized this contrast in his latest designs, which juxtaposed luxurious evening ensembles adorned with floral embroidery alongside relaxed jackets and slouchy denim.
As for the footwear, comfort took precedence, with all outfits, including the most glamorous evening gowns, paired with Mary Jane shoes, ballet flats, or platform loafers, often worn with delicate white socks.
The show notes highlighted the themes of “rigor and extravagance, strength in delicacy, Englishness with an Italian accent.”
De Sarno paid homage to British style with a few checked jackets, while other designs subtly referenced Scottish plaids, with dresses and coats adorned with shimmering bead fringe squares reminiscent of tartan patterns.
The fashion brand has a lesser-known historical tie to the U.K. Its founder, Guccio Gucci, spent some time working as a bellhop at the Savoy, a prestigious London hotel, over a century ago.
According to the brand, Guccio drew inspiration from this experience when he launched his initial store in Florence in 1921, focusing on selling luggage. The rest, as the saying goes, is history.
