On Friday, Maradun town, situated as the headquarters of Maradun Local Government Area in Zamfara State, witnessed a harrowing invasion by bandits, resulting in the tragic deaths of two individuals and the abduction of numerous others.
Faruku Shehu, a native of the area, recounted that the bandits descended upon the town in the early hours of Friday, unleashing gunfire indiscriminately and pillaging homes.
Shehu further stated that although the exact count of abducted individuals remained uncertain, it is estimated that the bandits may have taken as many as 30 people.
Sani, whose residence fell victim to the bandits’ rampage, expressed profound dismay at the alarming level of insecurity plaguing the town.
He recounted, “I heard the bandits tamper with the door of my living room and were advancing towards my inner chamber when I found a hiding spot.”
He further explained, “My wives and children took a different route and fled to seek refuge elsewhere.”
He voiced his distress regarding the frequent assaults on the town, lamenting, “Just last week Friday, we experienced a similar attack here.”
Hassan Ibrahim, another resident, bemoaned the presence of armed bandits stationed at various locations. “When I heard their movements, I swiftly closed my door, scaled the nearby wall, and fled for safety,” he recounted.
He emphasized the urgent need for intervention by the Minister of State for Defense, Bello Mattawale, to address the security situation in his hometown and prevent further attacks.
Despite numerous attempts, efforts to reach out to the spokesperson of the state police command, ASP Yazid Abubakar, proved futile as he could not be contacted by phone. Similarly, several calls made to the Commissioner for Security, Cpt. Bala Mairiga, went unanswered.
