Tutu Abraham Adesanya, granddaughter of the late founding leader of the National Democratic Coalition, Senator Abraham Adesanya, has offered a heartfelt tribute to her grandfather, marking 16 years since his passing.
Tutu, known on Twitter as @LionessofIjebu, shared the tribute on Saturday, expressing her emotions in a poignant message.
Adesanya, a prominent Nigerian politician and lawyer, wielded considerable influence in Nigeria’s political sphere during his lifetime. Born on December 25, 1922, he passed away on April 27, 2008. Revered among the Yoruba community, he was admired for his activism, particularly in championing democracy and the rights of the Yoruba people.
Tutu reminisced that Adesanya, affectionately called ‘Lalala’ by his loved ones, remained steadfast in his dedication to the Yoruba people and his advocacy for democratic principles.
She highlighted that the late Senator, a pivotal figure in the Alliance for Democracy and its National Chairman, significantly shaped Nigeria’s political terrain.
In her tribute, she penned, “To my dear friends, family, and followers, Today marks the 16th anniversary of the passing of my grandfather, the esteemed Senator Abraham Adesanya, fondly known within our family as Lalala! He was not just a prominent politician and revered lawyer, but also an unwavering activist and a stalwart defender of democracy and social equity.
“His resolute dedication to the Yoruba people and his steadfast advocacy for democratic principles left an enduring imprint on Nigeria’s political landscape. Despite facing military persecution and surviving an assassination attempt due to his pro-democracy activism (I was still a child at the time, and my younger brother, who is now an audit manager at the bank, might not have been alive today if the assassin had succeeded in targeting my grandfather).
“His bravery and resilience in challenging authoritarian rule served as a source of inspiration for many, laying the groundwork for the democratic advancements we witness today. Reflecting on his legacy, I am reminded of the values he held dear, including the rights of the Yoruba people, the significance of civic participation, and the unwavering pursuit of justice and equality. His legacy continues to guide me, underscoring the importance of standing up for righteousness, even in the face of adversity.”
While commemorating his memory, she acknowledged that his advocacy for democratic ideals has had a lasting impact on her life and the lives of numerous Nigerians.
“Today, I pay tribute to his memory and the profound influence he had on my life and the lives of countless others, as I carry forward his activist spirit, his commitment to democracy, and his unyielding dedication to societal improvement. May his example inspire many of us to be courageous, bold, and steadfast in our quest for a better Nigeria.”
She concluded by praying for the repose of his soul and the perpetuation of his legacy for generations to come.
“Rest in peace, Lalala, your memory and legacy will forever be cherished in my heart.”
